Essential Daily Nutrients
The Most Anti-Aging Nutrients of any Liquid Nutritional Supplement*.
Essential Daily Nutrients is a complete whole food multi-nutrient liquid supplement that provides optimal doses of specially selected anti-aging vitamins and minerals blended with super potent antioxidants derived from herbicide and pesticide free fruits and vegetables and herbs. The super potent antioxidants including Acai, Goji, and Green Tea have been added to Essential Daily Nutrients to increase the antioxidant value and help protect your body against aging and its potential consequences.*
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) assesses the actual amount of ingredients verse the amount of water in a product. According to a recent independent test by a leading lab, Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients tested as having the highest amount of total dissolved solids as compared to other popular liquid nutritional supplements. The higher the TDS score, the more ingredients and less water contained in the product and therefore a more efficacious product.
All those nutritional supplements with a laundry list of ingredients may not be as effective and powerful as they claim to be. Having the highest total dissolved solids score combined with one of the highest ORAC scores per serving, Essential Daily Nutrients is the world's most complete multi-nutrient liquid supplement.
It's Not Just a Juice!
Essential Daily Nutrients is a high-potency, multi-nutrient liquid supplement that tastes great and provides the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of naturally derived vitamins A, B, C, D, and E. This powerful supplement also contains the RDA of the minerals chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium and zinc, as well as a mineral boost from calcium, potassium, magnesium and a blend of 60 other trace minerals found in Tahitian sea salt.*
We've infused green tea, grape seed extract, and Maitake Mushroom to help support your immune system, as well as Red Korean Ginseng and a host of B vitamin to help increase alertness and concentration, support memory, and promote energy, stamina and endurance naturally. Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients supplement is provided in a whole-food fruit base of Acai and Goji berry, and combined with other exotic, high ORAC fruits-pineapple, cranberry, cherry, passion fruit, orange and agava nectar- to help replenish your body's cells, tissues and organs, fight free radicals and help repair oxidation damage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients?
Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients is a liquid supplement that helps replenish your body with a full spectrum of high-potency vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and herbs in a whole-food base of Goji, Acai and other exotic fruits.
What does "high-potency" mean?
The FDA's high-potency label distinction is reserved for supplements that contain l00 percent or more of the recommended daily allowances (RDA) for at least two-thirds of the vitamins and minerals listed on the label.
What vitamins are contained in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients and do they meet RDA
Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients delivers 100 percent (or more) of the RDA of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E. Each vitamin is water soluble (it can be quickly and easily absorbed), has been derived from natural fruit or mineral sources, and will help replenish the health of your body.*
Why is Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients provided as a liquid supplement?
Some experts believe that liquid supplements are up to 98% absorbed versus just 10-20% of multivitamins in solid form. Absorbability (bioavailability) is key in the consumption of multivitamins. It refers to your body's ability to digest, process and absorb nutrients. Most multivitamin pills contain vitamins that are bound with fillers and stabilizers. Pure liquid vitamins are simply a suspension of ingredients, and work faster than pills due to better bioavailability. Instead of waiting for digestion, breakdown, dissolving, absorption and finally introduction into the bloodstream, liquids work quickly and do not pass through the body undigested.
Can Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients replace my daily multivitamin?
Yes. Unlike most multivitamins, Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients contains (or surpasses) the RDA of more than 20 vitamins and minerals, as well as the health benefits of exotic, high ORAC fruits. In addition, because the supplement is delivered as a liquid, the ingredients are bioavailable and can be more readily absorbed in your body.
How much do I take?
Take 1 oz (two tablespoons) once a day. Because Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients contains several natural energy boosters (Red Korean Ginseng and vitamin B), you should not take it at night. As with any supplement, consult your physician if you have any specific concerns.
Is it okay to take more than one serving per day?
While with some people it is okay to take Essential Daily Nutrients twice a day, it may not be okay for others. Some vitamin and mineral supplements on the market contain 200% -300% of the daily value and people taking them have no bad effects whatsoever. However with some, consuming this excess can have adverse effects it really depends on the person's sensitivity, body weight and chemical make up. As with any supplement, please consult your physician prior to use and to address any specific questions regarding a healthy consumption amounts.
Can I take a half-dose in the morning and another half-dose in the afternoon?
While you can take half a dose twice a day, you might not experience the same benefits (an energy lift) as if you took a single 1-oz serving. To maximize your product experience we recommend that you take a full one ounce dose each day.
Can I take Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients with Natural Cellular Defense?
While you can take both products daily, we do not recommend that you take them together. To maximize each product's efficacy, you should take Essential Daily Nutrients and Natural Cellular Defense one hour apart.
Is Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients safe for kids?
All the ingredients are naturally derived and should not be harmful to children. However, as is the case with adults, should you have any specific questions or concerns regarding whether your child should take the product, you should consult with your pediatrician.
How much should children take?
Children ages 2-12: Take one tablespoon (.5 fl oz) daily. Children under 2, consult your pediatrician.
Is Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients safe for animals?
Yes. However, as is the case with humans, should you have any specific questions or concerns regarding whether your animal should take the product or how much product should be administered, you should consult your veterinarian.
What is the shelf-life of Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients?
The freshness of an unopened bottle of Essential Daily Nutrients is guaranteed for 1 year. The freshness of an opened, refrigerated bottle of Essential Daily Nutrients is guaranteed for approximately 30 days.
Does Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients need to be refrigerated?
You do not need to refrigerate Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients before using. However, to maximize your product experience we recommend that you serve the product cold. And like any product that contains fresh fruits or herbs, we recommend that once you open the product, you keep it refrigerated.
Why are minerals important to my health and which are contained in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients?
While the body can manufacture a few vitamins, it cannot manufacture a single mineral. Minerals are constituents of bones, teeth, soft tissue, muscle, blood and nerve cells. Nutritionally, minerals are grouped into two categories: bulk or essential minerals (also called macro minerals) and trace minerals (also called micro minerals). Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients not only contains the RDA of the macro minerals chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium and zinc, we've also included a mineral boost from calcium, potassium, magnesium and a blend of 60 other trace minerals to help promote nutrition and optimum health.*
What are Tahitian sea salts and why are they included in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients?
Because our oceans are self-cleansing, sea minerals extracted from deep in the ocean (Tahitian sea salts) are non-toxic for human, plant and animal consumption. The ocean is absolutely the only trace mineral source that receives all of the necessary trace minerals in the earth's crust. This happens because of continual erosion, from weathering and from plant growth decay. The glacier milks run into the ocean waters. Volcanic eruptions and activities associated with volcanic eruptions also add to the mineralization of the seas. Not good, but also a fact, pollution run-off from industry also add to the mineralization of the seas. Rainfall and the washing of minerals from the air into the oceans also offer more mineralization to the oceans.
Trace minerals have numerous roles. Oftentimes, because these minerals are found in such small quantities in the body, scientists and physicians have paid little attention to their importance in health and disease prevention. However, with the advent of improved science and the recognition of the efficacy of natural medicine, we are beginning to understand how vital these elements are to our health. Trace minerals, in a sense, are akin to the numerous tiny nails, nuts, and bolts that hold a house together. At first glance, a home is made of much more than these items. However, if they are slowly removed and never replaced, the house will continue to sag and finally fall apart. So it is the same with the smallest building blocks of our bodies. Trace minerals are important in the proper functioning of enzyme systems, nerve conduction and muscle function, assisting with transfer of nourishment into cells, providing the framework for tissues, and regulation of organ functions. These behind the scenes' functions are not possible without a constant, adequate supply of minerals.
The trace minerals in Waiora's blend of Tahitian sea salts include: sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, boron, iodine, iron, zinc, molybdenum, manganese and selenium.
What are "polyphenols" and why are they important to my health?
Polyphenols are a large group of natural antioxidants comprised of phenolic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, catechins, isoflavones and proanthocyanidins. Studies have demonstrated numerous health benefits of polyphenols including anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and cardio-protective properties. Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients contains green tea (used in China for more than 5,000 years to promote overall health and well-being) and grape seed extract (20 times more potent than vitamin C, 50 times stronger than vitamin E) to support your cardiovascular and immune systems, fight free radical damage and slow the affects of oxidative stress.*
What herbs are included in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients?
Herbs are nutritional foundation nutrients that help nourish the body's deepest and most basic elements. They have been used safely and effectively for centuries by Chinese and Native American cultures to promote overall health and well-being. Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients supports energy and mental acuity with a blend of Red Korean Ginseng and a host of B vitamins to help promote alertness and concentration, support memory, and promote energy, stamina and endurance naturally. It is also fortified with Maitake Mushroom (rich in minerals, vitamins, and amino acids) to provide superior antioxidant power and help support immune system function.*
What fruits are included in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients?
Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients is provided in a whole-food fruit base of Acai and Goji Berry, and combined with other high ORAC fruits—pineapple, cranberry, cherry, passion fruit, mango and agava nectar—to help replenish your body's cells, tissues and organs, fight free radicals and help slow the effects of oxidative damage.*
What is "Acai fruit?"
Acai fruit, found in the Amazon Rainforest, is considered one of the most nutritious fruits in the world and is rich in B and C vitamins, essential fatty acids (Omegas 3, 6 and 9), minerals, protein, antioxidants and anthocyanins (25 times that in red wine).
What are "Goji berries?"
Native to the Himalayan mountain region, Goji berry contains 19 amino acids (building-block protein), 21 trace minerals, a complete spectrum of antioxidant carotenoids, and is one of the most concentrated sources of beta-carotene, calcium, and vitamin C in the entire plant world.
Is Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients 100% vegetarian?
Yes. Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients does not include fish oil or any animal by-products and is therefore considered 100% vegetarian.
Is Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients certified organic?
No. Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients is all natural. Every vitamin, minerals, herb, fruit or blend is derived from natural sources. Since some of the fruits within the blend are derived from countries outside of the U.S. —namely Tibet and Brazil—we cannot make any organic claims about the product. In addition, each ingredient is tested for impurities—chemicals, toxins, pesticides and herbicides—to not only ensure that they are USDA & FDA compliant but also to ensure that only the purest ingredients are used.
What does it mean that each ingredient in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients is USDA & FDA compliant?
The FDA and USDA set guidelines for consumable products. Even though nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA and USDA, the ingredients that are used are. To ensure that a manufacturer's ingredients are in compliance, the FDA and USDA can randomly take a product and test it. If the product fails, the manufacturer can be fined and/or possibly shut down. Our manufacturers strictly follow these guidelines to ensure that each ingredient is compliant with FDA & USDA guidelines.
What kind of testing is done on Essential Daily Nutrients to ensure efficacy basically how do I know what it says on the label is what is in the product?
The testing that is undertaken is extensive. To begin with, we test the ingredient extracts that go into the product, the water quality in the mixture, we pull out any substances that are not good for the body. We test to make sure all of the vitamins, all of the minerals in the liquid formulation are what is in the product and on the label. Further, we test the efficacy and safety of all of the fruits - we actually break down all the fruits and do sugar tests and we check the carbohydrate content. Then we put the product through stability testing.
What is "stability testing?"
We take bottles that have been mixed and filled, heat them in ovens and then chill them. It's called freeze thawing. We then test for the vitamins, the minerals and other key components to see what it is in the product. This helps us to examine and ensure that what is in the product on day one is also in the product in month six. We check to see if the sugar content has broken down, has the color broken down, has the product held up during the heating and freezing process so that the vitamins that are in there have a long shelf life.
What sweeteners/sugars does Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients use? Are they natural?
The product contains sweeteners derived from natural sources in the whole-food fruit base (including pineapple, mango, cherry, passion fruit, cranberry and agava nectar), and are complimented by stevia—an all natural, non-caloric South American herb.
The label says five grams of sugar. Where does that sugar come from?
The sugar in the product comes from all natural sources. The FDA states you have to put how much sugar in a serving your body is going to get. However, it doesn't differentiate between added artificial sugars and the natural sugars that come from fruits (like Goji, Acai or agave nectar). The sugar in Essential Daily Nutrients is all natural.
Where does the folic acid in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients come from?
Like the other vitamins contained within the blend, folic acid (also known as vitamin B9) is derived from natural fruit and herb sources. For instance, the natural fruit included in the blend: pineapple, apple, cherry, passion fruit, and mango as well as the Maitake Mushroom each provide great sources of folic acid.
What is the source of the B-12 vitamins in Essential Daily Nutrients?
The vitamin B12 in Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients is derived from a non-animal fermentation process. It IS NOT from an animal source.
How does Waiora keep Essential Daily Nutrients fresh?
Naturally derived citric acid (from limes) and potassium sorbate (from Stevia and other fruit sources like Roman berries) serve as natural preservatives to keep Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients fresh. Both have been used for decades by food and beverage manufacturers and are recognized as safe by the FDA.
Why does the product appear cloudy?
The high mineral content of Waiora's Essential Daily Nutrients contributes to the cloudy appearance of the blend. It contains chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc—in amounts that meet or exceed RDA—as well as a boost from calcium, magnesium, potassium and more than 60 trace minerals from Tahitian sea salt.
What is the stuff at the bottom of the bottle?
Any product that is comprised of a blend of ingredients (including natural fruit sources and minerals) will inevitably result in some visual residue that appears on the bottom of the bottle. This separation is completely normal. Simply shake well and serve.
What the difference between "flash pasteurization" and "kettle cook?"
All liquid products made from natural, living ingredients are prone to bacterial growth. To help ensure that products do not contain bacteria, they are put through a process of heating (also called pasteurization). However, the process of heating can not only alter the taste, it may also diminish the nutrients contained in the product. Other products are "kettle cooked" which greatly diminishes the nutritional value of the finished product. The best way to ensure key nutrients are not destroyed is to quickly heat and then chill the product. This process is called "flash pasteurization."
Waiora's new Essential Daily Nutrients product is flash pasteurized. Additionally, nutrient values are tested after production to ensure they meet label claims. The product is quickly heated and cooled to eliminate any bacteria, yet maintains the full nutrient profile.

Volcanic Mineral Defends the Health of Your Cells
Thousands of years ago, volcanoes rose from the sea, dividing continents, creating mountains and forming much of the land as we know it. As these volcanoes erupted, molten lava and thick ash poured into the sea. The combination of thick ash and the salt from the sea caused a chemical reaction, and over thousands of years, precious minerals like zeolites began to form in the hardened lava.
What's a Zeolite & How Does It Work?
For centuries, the powdered forms of specific zeolites have been used as traditional remedies throughout Asia to promote overall health and well being. The story of the "volcanic rocks" has been passed down from generation-to-generation as more and more people have experienced its life-changing benefits.
Zeolites are natural volcanic minerals with an unique, complex crystalline structure. It's honeycomb framework of cavities and channels (like cages) works at the cellular level trapping, heavy metals and toxins. In fact, because it is one of the few negatively charged minerals in nature, zeolites act as magnets drawing toxins to it, capturing them in its cage and removing them from the body.
Key Benefits
* Supports a healthy immune system.*
* Helps remove heavy metals, toxins and other substances from the body.*
* Helps balance pH levels in the body.*
* 100 percent natural and non-toxic.*
* Safe for long-term use.*

Frequently Asked Questions
The following are some common questions regarding Natural Cellular Defense:
Q. What is Natural Cellular Defense?
A. Waiora's Natural Cellular Defense has been clinically formulated to help support a healthy immune system, remove heavy metal toxins and balance your body's pH levels.* Waiora's Natural Cellular Defense is comprised of an activated, liquid form of a naturally-occurring zeolite.
Q. What are zeolites?
A. Natural zeolites form in nature as a result of a chemical reaction between volcanic lava and saline water. Zeolites have large open spaces or cages in their structures that form channels. These channels allow the easy movement of ions and molecules into and out of the structure. This ability puts zeolites in the class of materials known as "molecular sieves."
There are about 40 naturally occurring zeolites and over 100 synthetic zeolites. There are three different classes of zeolites with varying molecular chemical structures:
* Chain-like structures whose minerals form acicular, or needle-like, prismatic crystals - as found in asbestos.
* Framework structures where the crystals are more equal in dimensions - as found in chabazite.
* Sheet-like structures where the crystals are flattened - as found in clinoptilolite.
Another unique and important fact about zeolites is that they are one of the few negatively charged minerals found in nature. The natural properties of zeolites act as molecular sieves, or filtering agents, that attract and trap into them positively charged atoms, ions, and compounds, and can remove them from a system.
Q. Which zeolite do you use for the Natural Cellular Defense?
A. We use naturally-occurring clinoptilolite in the Natural Cellular Defense. This particular zeolite has been used for over 800 years in traditional medicine to improve general health. It has been widely used in its raw form in places like India, China and Russia. In the United States, zeolites have been used in water filtration, air purification, animal feed and even in fertilizers to keep the crops healthy. Now we're using it in an enhanced form using a proprietary activation technology as a dietary supplement.
Q. So, what is actually in this mineral? Is it something that we can find on the periodic table?
A. It's a mineral with a cage-like structure. It's created by aluminum and silica that are trapped in small tetrahedra (pyramid-like structures) created by oxygen atoms. These form 8-sided and 10-sided rings that stack on top of each other to form channels. The aluminum is positively charged and the oxygen around it is negatively charged, giving the entire molecule a net negative charge. This is a very stable compound. For all practical purposes, this is an invincible molecule.
Q. Can the aluminum be absorbed into the body from the zeolite?
A. No. The aluminum in the product is at the center of a tetrahedron (it's surrounded by tightly-held oxygen atoms). It is not free to exchange into the system. So imagine you have a pyramid that's made of oxygen with aluminum in the center of that pyramid. It's what they call 'non-exchangeable aluminum'. We have done studies where we have found that Natural Cellular Defense increased the excretion of additional aluminum, which means that the zeolite is pulling aluminum out of the body in addition to the aluminum contained in the product itself.
Q. Is there any possibility of the aluminum being released because of this?
A. Absolutely not. The aluminum is in the middle of the tetrahedron of oxygen. So imagine you have a pyramid that's made of oxygen with aluminum in the center of that pyramid. It's what they call non-exchangeable aluminum. Studies have been done where 100 percent of the aluminum was recaptured as it came out in fecal matter and urine from the patients. Additionally, it has been found that a patient would excrete additional aluminum, which means that the zeolite is pulling aluminum out of the body in addition to the aluminum contained in the product itself.
Q. How does Natural Cellular Defense work?
A. The zeolite in the Natural Cellular Defense attracts and traps small, highly-charged particles that fit into the pores and channels of the zeolite cage. This includes heavy metal toxins. The Natural Cellular Defense has been shown to remove mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic and other heavy metals. Research has shown that it does help balance pH, which makes a more alkaline system. A slightly alkaline environment in the body helps to stabilize the immune system.
Q. Who needs to take Natural Cellular Defense?
A. Everyone is exposed to heavy metal toxins on a daily basis in the air they breathe, the food they eat and the water they drink. In order to remove these toxins and maintain a clean and healthy body, everyone should take Natural Cellular Defense on a daily basis. We recommend the product for persons 18 years of age or older. People under the age of 18, pregnant women and children should consult their physicians prior to use.
Q. How is Natural Cellular Defense manufactured?
A. The manufacturing facility itself is certified to be cGMP-compliant (current-Good Manufacturing Practices) by the FDA. GMP is an FDA (Food & Drug Administration) term for the Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QA/QC) procedures that are standard in the facility. This also includes training of the personnel, storage of materials and micro-analysis of the product. The manufacturing process takes approximately five to seven days. Some of the finished product is sent for analysis using Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The product is also sent through a detailed micro-analysis, where it is evaluated for any sort of contamination (bacterial, molds, spores, etc.). Finally, some bottles from every batch are retained so that these can be tested on a future date if it becomes necessary. We also periodically inspect the manufacturing facility and all of their batch records.
Q. Why does the Natural Cellular Defense sometimes look, taste or smell differently?
A. The zeolite in the Natural Cellular Defense is an all-natural mined product. As such, there will be some variability as to its excess mineral content (i.e. magnesium, sodium, potassium, iron, etc.). Although these are very slight variations, they can cause great differences in the taste, smell and color of the product. Additionally, some minerals may darken in solution (i.e. iron). Because of this, some of the Natural Cellular Defense can have a brownish tint.
Q. If there are different amounts of minerals in the product, can it be dangerous?
A. No. The variations in the excess mineral content are negligible and cannot be considered as a source of the mineral
Q. Why is some of the product tinted brown or green?
A. The zeolite is a naturally-mined mineral. Because it is mined, its pigment qualities can be affected by outside elements - time of year, air and water most specifically (in the spring time, there may be more rain or snow run off as opposed to the fall). The color variations of zeolite can and do range from an off-white/beige color to a light green. Although these are very slight variations, they can cause great differences in the organoleptic properties of the product (taste and smell). A recently tested sample of the product contained less than one (<1) microgram of iron. This was certainly enough iron to change the color of the product, but not enough to have any physiological effect.
Q. Is one microgram a large amount of iron?
A. No. It's a negligible amount. As an example, one average bite of steak has approximately 500 micrograms of iron.
Q. Why are other mineral products consistent while the Natural Cellular Defense may be different from one bottle to the next?
A. Most multi-mineral products use formulations of single, purified minerals. These are known quantities that may be entirely consistent. The Natural Cellular Defense uses a natural, mined product that contains natural variations of its mineral content. While the amount of the zeolite is standardized and remains constant in the product, the excess minerals may change.
Q. Can the plastic from the bottles leach into the product?
A. No. We use a high-density bottle that is resistant to leaching and there are no components in the Natural Cellular Defense that are known to degrade plastic. We have had the bottle independently tested for plastic leaching and the results showed no leaching.
Q. Will heat affect the zeolite in the Natural Cellular Defense?
A. The zeolite is an extremely stable molecule that can withstand very high temperatures (over 900 degrees Fahrenheit). Hot days will not change the product or limit its efficacy.
Q. Will cold alter the product in any way?
A. The zeolite is completely stable at cold temperatures. If the product becomes frozen, simply defrost it and shake it lightly before using to ensure a uniform suspension of the zeolite.
Q. Can the zeolite in the Natural Cellular Defense lower potassium in the body?
A. No. The zeolite has a very specific reactivity series. Smaller atoms with higher positive charges have greater affinity for the zeolite. Heavy metals tend to be small and highly charged while the necessary minerals tend to be larger with lower charges. For example, arsenic has a charge of +3 and a diameter of 1.8 Angstroms. Potassium only has a charge of +1 and a comparatively large diameter of 2.8 Angstroms. Arsenic has high affinity for the zeolite while potassium has almost no affinity for the zeolite.

Tips for Reducing Your CVD Risk
Reduce Your Risk
There probably never will be a prescription that guarantees the health of your heart. But waiting until heart disease strikes and hoping for a guarantee of a cure is unrealistic too! You can take steps to prevent or delay heart disease and improve your risk factors. You can also make changes that will improve your outlook is you already have coronary artery disease. The impact of these steps goes beyond potential protection from heart disease. They can improve the way you look and feel today.
You make decisions everyday that involve your lifestyle. Individual decisions that you make-whether to smoke, what to eat, how to find time for exercise, how to relax-become habits. Don't expect to change all your habits at once. The size of the change is not as important as constant reinforcement. Good health habits are the work of a lifetime.
Modifiable Risk Factors
* Cigarette smoke
For the individual who smokes, their risk of a heart attack is more than double that of a non-smoker. Smokers who have a heart attack also are more likely to die and die suddenly (within an hour). Cigarette smoking also acts with other risk factors to greatly increase the risk for coronary heart disease. Being exposed to other people's smoke increases the risk of heart disease even for non-smokers. If you are a smoker and you stop smoking, you promptly decrease your risk for heart disease.
* High blood cholesterol
A person's cholesterol level is also affected by their age, gender, heredity and lifestyle. Lowering blood cholesterol levels through lifestyle and if required, medication will reduce your risk for heart attack. Increased levels of cholesterol in the blood, particularly low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) contribute to the development of atherosclerosis ("hardening of the arteries"). The process of atherosclerosis causes blockages to form in arteries: If these blockages occur in the arteries of the heart, a heart attack may result; if the blockages occur in the arteries supplying the brain, a stroke may result. Blockages may also form in the arteries of the legs that can result in lack of blood flow to the lower extremities.
* High blood pressure
High blood pressure makes your heart have to work harder, and over time, this may cause the heart to thicken and become stiff. High blood pressure increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and congestive heart failure. Even a "little bit" of high blood pressure can significantly increase your risk for cardiovascular disease. According to Canadian guidelines, optimal blood pressure 120/80 - 129/84 mmHg).
* Physical inactivity
An inactive lifestyle is a risk factor. Regular, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity helps prevent heart and blood vessel diseases. Even moderate-intensity activities help if done regularly and long term. Exercise can help control blood cholesterol, diabetes and obesity, as well as help lower blood pressure in some individuals.
* Obesity and overweight
According to Statistics Canada (1998), 47.9% of Canadians were overweight. Genes and heredity may increase an individual's susceptibility to being overweight, however most people consume too many calories, or have low activity levels. People who have excess body weight are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke, even if they have no other risk factors. Excess weight increases the heart's work and also contributes to high blood pressure, increased triglycerides, and lowers HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. It can also make diabetes more likely to develop. Many obese and overweight people may have difficulty losing weight, but even reducing your weight by as few as 10 to 20 pounds, you can lower your heart disease risk.
How body weight is distributed is also important: Individuals who carry their extra body weight around their waist are at particular risk. According to Canadian Guidelines, waist circumference is a useful estimate of abdominal obesity and indicator of cardiovascular risk. For men, their risk increases with a waist circumference of 102 cm or greater, for women, their risk increases with a waist circumference of 88cm or greater.
* Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes seriously increases your risk of developing cardiovascular disease - most individuals with diabetes die from some form of heart or blood vessel disease. In addition, diabetes is the leading cause of renal failure requiring dialysis. Individuals with diabetes can reduce their risk by having good control of their blood glucose levels. If you have diabetes, it's extremely important to work with your healthcare provider to manage it and control any other risk factors you can.
What other factors contribute to heart disease risk?
* Homocysteine
Homocysteine is an amino acid in the blood. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke and deep vein thrombosis. Research studies are underway to determine the relationship between homocysteine and cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine levels are largely determined by genetics, so if someone in your family has high homocysteine, you should have your homocysteine level checked with a blood test. Certain individuals at high risk should receive treatment for elevated homocysteine levels which includes folic acid and B vitamins. Homocysteine levels are also determined by renal function. If you have mild renal failure, the homocysteine levels are increased and difficult to reduce.
* C-Reactive Protein (CRP)
CRP (as a high sensitive test) is a marker of inflammation in the body. Because atherosclerosis includes an inflammatory process, measurements of CRP may be helpful to estimate an individual's risk for developing cardiovascular disease and determining treatment. CRP should not be measured during any acute illness, and is not useful in determining cardiovascular risk in individuals who have chronic inflammatory conditions.
* Lipoprotein (a)
Lipoprotein (a) {also referred to as Lp(a)} is a cholesterol particle very similar to LDL-cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol). High levels of Lp(a) contribute to atherosclerosis and make the blood more susceptible to clot formation. Lp(a) levels are determined by genetics: If you have a positive family history for premature heart disease you should have your Lp(a) level checked. Elevated Lp(a) levels appear to have their worst effect when there are other risk factors present, or when the LDL-cholesterol is high or the Total Cholesterol:HDL-cholesterol ratio is high. Treatment is targeted at reducing these other risk factors to mitigate the risk associated with Lp(a).
* Stress
How an individual responds to stress may contribute to cardiovascular disease. Research has identified a relationship between heart disease risk and an individuals level of stress, their health behaviors and socioeconomic status. Stress may also affect other risk factors - for example, people under stress may overeat, drink alcohol, start or increase smoking as a way to cope with the level of stress in their life.
* Alcohol
Research has shown that the risk of heart disease in people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol (an average of one drink for women or two drinks for men per day) is lower than in nondrinkers. However, it is not recommended that nondrinkers begin to use alcohol for a perceived health benefit. There are many negative aspects to alcohol consumption. Drinking too much alcohol can increase blood pressure, high triglycerides and can lead to heart failure, cancer and stroke.
It is important to know that there is still much to learn about the causes of heart disease and stroke. For example, some individuals will not have any of the risk factors described here, however they may experience a heart attack; conversely some individuals may have all of these risk factors, and never experience a heart attack or stroke. It is important that you discuss your risk level with your health care professional.

Acai:
The acai berry is one of the world's most interesting and unique foods. It may also be one of its healthiest. Chock-full of antioxidants, amino acids, AND essential fatty acids, the tiny little acai berry packs a nutritional wallop rarely seen in the natural world. In fact, some experts consider it to be the world's most "complete" natural food.
Acai berries come from the acai (pronounced ah-SIGH-ee) palm tree of South America. The native peoples of Brazil have eaten the berry for centuries and there are, in fact, many local legends about acai's incredible healing and sustaining powers. It remains a popular "health and energy" food in that country today. Fortunately for North Americans and Europeans, in the last few years acai berry products have made their way to foreign shores. Now just about anyone can (and should) try this incredibly healthy food for themselves.
To give you an idea of just how powerful this fruit really is, consider the nutritional profile of acai berry pulp: - 10-30 times the anthocyanins (strong antioxidants) of red wine - an almost perfect essential amino acid complex (the "building blocks" of protein) - 60% Oleic acid, an omega-9 monounsaturated essential fatty acid - 12% Linoleic acid, an omega-6 polyunsaturated essential fatty acid - a full array of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements - large amounts of plant sterols (phytochemicals with numerous health benefits) - significant amounts of natural dietary fiber - natural calcium! As you can see, there aren't many things that the acai berry doesn't have! But the good news doesn't end there. Acai has a vibrant taste that most people find very, very pleasing. Though difficult to describe, some people compare the flavor of acai to tart, chocolate-covered cherries or blueberry ice cream with a hint of chocolate. Not bad for something so healthy!
A few of the more common benefits reported by people who consume acai berries on a regular basis include: - Greater energy and vitality - Increased stamina - Improved circulation - Improved digestion - Better sleep - Improved sexual function - Healthier, better-looking skin - Increased sense of overall "well-being" By now you're probably aching to try this super-fruit for yourself. Fortunately it's becoming more and more widely available throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia. Look for acai smoothies and acai berry juices at your local health foods shops. There are also several health supplements on the market which contain dried acai berry powder... but it would be a shame to miss out on the delicious and unique taste of this amazing berry!

Acai (pronounced ah-sy-ee) is a berry grown mainly in South America that has a number of nutritional properties, and has even been known to prevent certain diseases. There are a number of reasons to take acai supplements or drink acai juice on a daily basis no matter what your health needs are; here are seven of the great qualities of acai juice that everyone should take advantage of.
Antioxidants
Antocianine, one of the main substances in the acai berry, is high in antioxidants like Vitamins C and E and helps the body fight of free radicals in the environment. Harmful substances in the air like smog, cigarette smoke, and even the damaging effects of the sun can be significantly reduced by drinking acai juice.
While there are a number of other fruit juices that fight off antioxidants, none of them come close to acai juice. Acai berries are up to six times more potent than noni juice or mangosteen, so a daily intake of acai could protect you from contracting colds or the flu, as well as give your skin a healthy glow.
Calcium
Acai has a significant amount of calcium, which can help prevent osteoporosis, especially in women. Calcium helps to strengthen the bones and prevent fractures, especially in the hip, spine, and wrist, and in addition with the right diet filled with other calcium-rich foods and Vitamin D, osteoporosis can also be effectively treated.
In addition to osteoporosis prevention, women with extreme menstrual pain can also benefit from acai juice. Calcium-rich foods tend to coat the lining of the stomach and uterus, and reduce the pain that comes from cramps and bloating.
Helping to develop healthy teeth and gums is also another characteristic of calcium. For a whiter smile and stronger teeth, as well as the prevention of gingivitis as well as other gum diseases, try adding a serving of acai juice or powder to your normal dental care routine.
Lower Cholesterol Levels
Acai berries can help to lower cholesterol levels due to their high fiber content. The high fiber in content can also help to prevent colon cancer, since the fiber in the acai berry helps to move substances through the digestive track and arteries. The berries contain Omega-3 fatty acids as well, another substance that lowers cholesterol. Omega-3 fatty acids can also improve the health of your skin because it improves circulation and increase the level of protein in the body.
Macro minerals
Macro minerals are necessary minerals that are found in both foods and supplements. Most people need high amounts of these minerals, so acai juice is one of the easiest ways to make sure that you get the necessary amount of macro minerals per day. Potassium, sulfur, magnesium and phosphorous are some of the main macro minerals that people don't get enough of. Sulfur can help to improve acne, magnesium can help women with menopausal complications, and potassium has been known to improve heart health.
Low glycemic index
Another benefit of acai is its low glycemic index. The glycemic index is the ranking of carbohydrates based on their effect on blood glucose or blood sugar levels. The quicker carbohydrates break down during digestion, the higher the glycemic index. Carbohydrates that breakdown slowly, releasing glucose gradually into the blood stream, have low glycemic index. Foods that are low in glycemic levels are slow to digest and be absorbed into the body's bloodstream and cause the body's blood sugar and insulin levels to rise slowly. Low glycemic Index diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in diabetic individuals. They also have benefits for weight control because they help control appetite and delay hunger. Low glycemic levels can also help individuals who are trying to lose weight, since it keeps you fuller longer, and can even prolong physical strength and endurance.
Increased energy
Because of the acai berries ability to help fight off diseases and sicknesses due to its high level of antioxidants, a higher energy level can be attained by drinking acai juice every day. High antioxidant levels boost the immune system, and people have reported having boundless energy and endurance as a result of taking an acai supplement daily. This is also due to the high content of vitamins and minerals in acai, which can help to maintain a healthy diet by providing part of the daily allowance of certain vitamins. Acai juice constitutes a serving of fruit, so the more you consume, the more your body will be cleansed and able to run properly, and fatigue will be eliminated over time.
High celadrin levels
Even if you exercise regularly and eat well, you may still experience the effects of aging and constant physical activity. This can have an affect on your bones and organs over time, and acai berry can help to regulate your stress levels, and even to repair your body.
Celadrin, a natural anti-inflammatory compound of fatty acids that is derived from bovine tallow oil, has been known to promote healthy joint function by lubricating the membranes that cushions joints and bones. Glucosamine, a substance that works well with celadrin and is also found in acai, helps to build healthy cartilage in the body.
Once you decide to take acai on a regular basis, be sure to talk your doctor about your new diet choices to discuss ways to maximize the benefits of acai in your diet. Making certain improvements to your eating habits, exercising regularly, and taking certain prescribed medication as instructed can all help to make acai one of your best dietary choices.

Superfood No. 1: Açaí
Nature's Energy Fruit
It may seem odd to start this list of superfoods with one you’ve likely never even heard of. But studies have shown that this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world! Açaí (ah-sigh-ee) is the high-energy berry of a special Amazon palm tree. Harvested in the rainforests of Brazil, açaí tastes like a vibrant blend of berries and chocolate. Hidden within its royal purple pigment is the magic that makes it nature's perfect energy fruit. Açaí is packed full of antioxidants, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Although açaí may not be available in your local supermarket, you can find it in several health food and gourmet stores (often in juice form). A new product featuring the unsweetened pulp is now also available, and I highly recommend that you choose this form of açaí.
Açaí pulp contains:
A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.
A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration.
The fatty acid content in açaí resembles that of olive oil, and is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid. Oleic acid is important for a number of reasons. It helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane; together they help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and we know, inflammation causes aging.
Acai:
The açaí palm (pronounced [asaˈi]) is a member of the genus Euterpe, which contains 7 species of palms native to tropical Central and South America, from Belize south to Brazil and Peru, growing mainly in floodplains and swamps.
The genus is named after the muse Euterpe of Greek mythology. Euterpe are tall, slender, attractive palms growing to 15-30 meters, with pinnate leaves up to 3 meters long. Many of the palms that were once in the genus Euterpe have been reclassified into the genus Prestoea (Riffle, 2003). The species Euterpe oleracea is usually called Açaí Palm, after the Portuguese derivation of the Tupian word ïwasa'i, 'fruit that cries or expels water'.
Stem
Heart of palm, the soft inner growing tip of some palms (Euterpe edulis, Euterpe oleracea, Bactris gasipaes), is often consumed in salads.[citation needed]
Serving of açaí pulp
The fruit, a small, round, black-purple drupe about 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter, similar in appearance and size to a grape but with less pulp, is produced in branched panicles of 700 to 900 fruits. Two crops of fruit are produced each year. The fruit has a single large seed about 7–10 mm in diameter. The exocarp of the ripe fruits is a deep purple color, or green, depending on the kind of açaí and its maturity. The mesocarp is pulpy and thin, with a consistent thickness of 1 mm or less. It surrounds the voluminous and hard endocarp which contains a seed with a diminutive embryo and abundant endosperm.[citation needed] The seed makes up about 80% of the fruit (Schauss, 2006c).
The berries are also harvested as food. In a study of three traditional Caboclo populations in the Amazon region of Brazil, açaí palm was described as the most important plant species because the fruit makes up such a major component of diet (up to 42% of the total food intake by weight) and is economically valuable in the region (Murrieta et al., 1999).
The juice and pulp of açaí fruits (Euterpe oleracea) are frequently used in various juice blends, smoothies, sodas, and other beverages. In northern Brazil, açaí (or jussara, which is one of the fruit's common folk names) is traditionally served in gourds called "cuias" with tapioca and, depending on the local preference, can be consumed either salty or sweet (sugar, rapadura and honey are known to be used in the mix). Açaí has become popular in southern Brazil where it is consumed cold as açaí na tigela ("açaí in the bowl"), mostly mixed with granola - a fad where açai is considered as an energizer. Açaí is also widely consumed in Brazil as an ice cream flavor or juice.
As açaí deteriorates rapidly after harvest, its raw material is generally only available outside the immediate growing region as juice or fruit pulp that has been frozen, dried, or freeze-dried. However, several companies now manufacture juices, health drinks, yoghurts, and sorbets made from açaí berries, often in combination with other fruits.
Apart from the use of its berries as food, the açai palm has other commercial uses. Leaves may be used for making hats, mats, baskets, brooms and roof thatch for homes, and trunk wood, resistant to pests, for building construction (Silva, 2005).
Comprising 80% of the berry mass, seeds may be ground for livestock food or as a component of organic soil for plants. Planted seeds are used for new palm tree stock which, under the right growing conditions, requires only months to form seedlings although the açaí palm has not been successfully cultivated outside of South America (Schauss, 2006c). Seeds are also used to make a variety of jewelry and souvenirs[1][2].
In traditional medical practices, fruit and roots have been used for treating gastrointestinal problems and sap as an astringent[citation needed]. The seeds are a source of polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids (see below; Plotkin, 1984; Silva, 2005; Schauss et al., 2006a).
Several early studies done on the nutritional composition of açaí were summarized by Rogez in a 2000 book in Portuguese entitled "Açaí: Preparo, Composição e Melhoramento de Conservação" (Schauss et al. 2006a). Other previous studies dating back to the 1930s and 40s were not always in agreement on nutritional contents.
A recent study using modern procedures and a standardized freeze-dried açaí fruit pulp and skin powder found nutrient analysis results from 100 g (3.5 ounces) of powder to equal 533.9 calories, 52.2 g carbohydrates, 8.1 g protein and 32.5 g total fat. The carbohydrate portion includes 44.2 g of fiber (Schauss et al. 2006a). Having nearly one-third of its mass as dietary fiber, açaí is an exceptional source of this valuable macronutrient: a 100 g serving of the powder would provide all the recommended fiber needs for adults (20-30 g per day).
Açaí is particularly rich in fatty acids, feeling oily to the touch. It contains high levels of the monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid (56.2% of total fats). It is also rich in palmitic acid (24.1% of total fats, a saturated fat) and the polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid (12.5% of total fats). (Schauss et al. 2006a). β-sitosterol (beta-sitosterol), a phytosterol that competes with dietary cholesterol for absorption and so may reduce blood cholesterol levels, is also unusually rich (78-91% of total sterols) (Lubrano, 1994; Schauss 2006a).
A later study found vitamin C content was negligible, calcium levels of 260 mg, iron to be 4.4 mg and vitamin A equal to 1002 IU per 100 g of dry weight (Schauss et al. 2006a). A recent study found 19 amino acids in pulp and skin powder, with especially high contents of aspartic acid and glutamic acid. The amino acid content totalled 7.59% of the total dry weight (Schauss et al. 2006a).
Due to the large amount of waste that accumulates during the harvesting of the hearts of palm, sawdust from the left-over trunks of the açaí palms have been analyzed for possible uses including energy utilization. The inner layer of the trunk is mineral rich, and is significantly higher in all the minerals that were tested including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron compared to the outer layer of the tree. This inner layer could potentially be used as a source for these minerals. Ash content (often used as an alkaline source for saponification or in plant fertilizers) was also higher in the inner section of the tree. Levels of lignins, cellulose, holocellulose and gross heat production were slightly higher in the outer trunk layers, and cellulose levels were fairly high overall (Dyer, 1996).
The dense pigmentation of açaí has led to several experimental studies of its anthocyanins, a group of polyphenols that give the deep color to berries, other fruits and vegetables and are high in antioxidant value under active research for potential health benefits[3]. A recent study using a standardized freeze-dried açaí fruit pulp and skin powder found the total anthocyanin levels to be 319 mg per 100 grams (Schauss et al., 2006a). Cyandin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3-rutinoside are major açaí anthocyanins [4].
Twelve other flavonoid-like compounds were additionally found in the Schauss et al. 2006a study, including homoorientin, orientin, taxifolin deoxyhexose, isovitexin and scoparin, as well as several unknown flavonoids. Proanthocyanidins, another group of polyphenolic compounds high in antioxidant value, totalled 1,289 mg per 100 grams of the freeze-dried pulp/skin powder, with a profile similar to that of blueberries (Schauss et al., 2006a). Resveratrol was additionally found to be present in acai in this study, although at low levels of 1.1 microgram per gram.
A number of studies have measured the antioxidant strength of açaí. Unfortunately, the sources of açaí and preparations (e.g., whole fruit, juice, extract or soluble powder) for reporting the results vary. A recent report using a standardized oxygen radical absorbance capacity or ORAC analysis on a freeze-dried açaí powder found that this powder showed a high antioxidant effect against peroxyl radical (1027 micromol TE/g). This is approximately 10 times more than lowbush blueberry or cranberry on a dry weight basis (Wu, 2004). The ORAC value for this freeze-dried powder was significantly higher than when other methods of drying the fruit were tested (Schauss, 2006c). Other powders with ORAC values this high include cinnamon (2675 micromol TE/g), cloves (3144 micromol TE/g), turmeric (2001 micromol TE/g) and dried oregano (1593 micromol TE/g) (Wu, 2004).
The freeze-dried powder also showed very high activity against superoxide, with a SOD assay level of 1614 units/g. Superoxide is thought to be the initial producer of other more potent reactive oxygen species[citation needed], and thus protection against it is very important as a first line of defense for the body. Antioxidant activity against both peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radicals was also observed, although effects were milder than that seen against peroxyl radical and superoxide. Additionally, antioxidant molecules from the freeze-dried powder were shown to actually enter freshly obtained human neutrophils and inhibit oxidation induced by hydrogen peroxide, even at very low concentrations of the açaí powder including 0.1 part per trillion (Schauss et al., 2006b). A previous report using a total oxygen scavenging capacity assay also found that açaí has extremely high antioxidant effects against peroxyl radical, as well as a high capacity against peroxynitrite, and a moderate capacity against hydroxyl radical when compared with other fruit and vegetable juices[5] .
Only 10% of açaí's high antioxidant effects could be explained by its anthocyanin content[6], indicating that other polyphenols contribute most of the antioxidant activity. Schauss et al. similarly found that that ratio of the hydrophilic ORAC levels to the total phenolics in the freeze-dried fruit was 50, a higher value than the typical fruit and vegetable ratio of 10[citation needed].
Schauss et al. (2006b) also utilized the "Total Antioxidant" or TAO assay to differentiate the "fast-acting" (measured at 30 seconds) and "slow-acting" (measured at 30 minutes) antioxidant levels present in freeze-dried powder. Acai was found to have a higher "slow-acting" antioxidant components, suggesting a more sustained antioxidant effect compared to "fast-acting" components.
Antioxidant values of the seeds of the açaí fruit have also been reported (Rodrigues, 2006). Similarly to the berries, the antioxidant capacity of the seeds were strongest against peroxyl radicals, at a concentration in the same order of magnitude as the berries. The seeds had a stronger antioxidant effect than the berries for peroxynitrite and hydroxyl radicals, although still less than its effects against peroxy radical. The results of this study were not linear based on the concentration of the seeds that were used. The authors suggest the future use of the seeds (a by-product of juice making) for antioxidant benefits such as prolonging shelf-life of foods.
Açaí, in the form of a specific freeze-dried fruit pulp, was shown to have mild inhibitory effects on cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 (Schauss et al., 2006b), both of which have roles in acute and chronic inflammation.
Lower concentrations of the freeze-dried pulp were found to be slightly stimulating to macrophages in vitro. Macrophages are white blood cells that are an important part of the immune system of the body. Also in macrophages, freeze-dried açaí pulp was found to inhibit the production of nitric oxide induced by LPS, found in gram negative bacteria cell membrane (Schauss et al. 2006b). This effect increased as the concentration of the açaí increased.
In 2006, a study performed at the University of Florida showed that açaí fractions containing polyphenolics could reduce proliferation of HL-60 leukemia cells in vitro. This was most likely due to increased rapid cell death (apoptosis) as fractions were also found to activate caspase-3 (an enzyme important in apoptosis) which was inversely correlated to cell death. (Pozo-Insfran et al., 2006).
Due to its deep pigmentation, orally-administered açaí has been tested as a contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging of the gastrointestinal system (Cordova-Fraga et al., 2004). Its anthocyanins have been characterized for stability as a natural food coloring agent (Del Pozo-Insfran et al., 2004).
cai Berry benefit by Ray Sahelian, M.D. Health benefit of acai supplement
The acai berry is found in the Amazon forest and is promoted as having very powerful antioxidant properties. The acai berry is purple colored and small and comes from a palm tree known by the Brazilians as "the tree of life." The predominant beneficial substances in the acai berry are polyphenols, flavonoids, mostly of the anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins categories.
Historical uses of the acai berry fruit
Acai has been a traditional food for several centuries of the native people living in the Amazon forest. However it was only a few years ago, about the year 2000, that the acai berry was introduced to the Western market.

Acai berry benefit
Apparently the dark purple skin of the acai berry has many times the anthocyanin content as red wine. The antioxidants in acai may benefit some health conditions but acai research in humans is quite limited. Acai berry also has plant sterols, essential fatty acids, and fiber. Human research is required before learning the potential acai berry benefit in medical conditions or prevention of health problems.
Acai berry, in vitro, has a very high antioxidant capacity, especially for scavenging superoxide and peroxyl molecules. Compound in acai have also been found to have cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 inhibitor activity.
Acai Benefit as Vasodilator
Polyphenols in acai berry have the ability to act as vasodilators, which means they can dilate blood vessels. This means acai berry extract could benefit in conditions where blood vessel dilation is needed.
Endothelium-dependent vasodilator effect of Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Acai) extracts in mesenteric vascular bed of the rat.
Vascul Pharmacol. 2006 Sep 1; Department of Pharmacology and Psychobiology, IBRAG, UERJ, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) a fruit from the Amazon region, largely consumed in Brazil is rich in polyphenols. Experiments were undertaken to determine whether hydro-alcoholic extract obtained from acai induces a vasodilator effect in the rat mesenteric vascular bed precontracted with norepinephrine and, if so, to elucidate the underlying mechanism. The present study demonstrates that the vasodilator effect of acai extract is dependent on activation of nitric oxide -cGMP pathway and may also involve endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor release. The vasodilator effect suggest a possibility to use acai berry extract as a medicinal plant, in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Acai berry availability
Acai is sold as capsules, and can be placed in smoothies or made into bars. You will also find acai berry made into acai juice. Acai pulp is also useful. Acai fruit juice and acai berry juice.
Acai Berry benefit Summary
Human studies with acai fruit or acai extract are lacking, therefore no firm statements can be made regarding the clinical uses of this plant. However, eating acai berry or taking an acai berry supplement as part of a healthy diet seems to be a reasonable approach. An acai berry extract supplement can be taken once or twice a week with breakfast.

A standardized freeze-dried acai fruit pulp / skin powder was used for all analyses and tests. Among many findings, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and other flavonoids were found to be the major phytochemicals. Two anthocyanins, cyandin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3-rutinoside were found to be predominant; three others were also found as minor anthocyanins. The total content of anthocyanins was measured as 3.1 mg/g dry weight. Polymers were found to be the major proanthocyanidins. The concentration of total proanthocyanidins was calculated as 13 mg/g dry weight Other flavonoids, namely, homoorientin, orientin, isovitexin, scoparin, and taxifolin deoxyhexose, along with several unknown flavonoids, were also detected. Resveratrol was found but at a very low concentration. In addition, components including fatty acids, amino acids, sterols, minerals, and other nutrients were analyzed and quantified. Total polyunsaturated fatty acid, total monounsaturated fatty acid, and total saturated fatty acids contributed to 11%, 60%, and 28% of total fatty acid. Oleic acid (53%) and palmitic acid (26%) were found to be the two dominant fatty acids. Nineteen amino acids were found; the total amino acid content was determined to be 7% of total weight. The total sterols accounted for 0.048% by weight of powder. The three sterols B-sitosterol, campesterol, and sigmasterol were identified.
Acai Tree
Euterpe oleraceae is a large palm tree indigenous to the Amazon River and its tributaries and estuaries in South America. Its fruit, known as acai, is of great economic value to native people.

Total oxidant scavenging capacities of Euterpe oleracea Mart. ( Acai ) fruits.
Int J Food Sci Nutr. 2005 Feb;56(1):53-64.
The antioxidant capacities of 11 commercial and non-commercial samples of Euterpe oleracea Mart. ( acai ) fruit pulp were studied with the total oxidant scavenging capacity assay in a modified and automated version against three reactive oxygen species. The antioxidant capacities of all purple acai samples were found to be excellent against peroxyl radicals, good against peroxynitrite and poor against hydroxyl radicals compared with common European fruit and vegetable juices recently analysed. In all cases the correlation between sample concentration and antioxidant capacities was non-linear. The antioxidant capacities against all three reactive oxygen species of the fruit pulp from one white acai variety were very low. The phenolic compounds in purple acai fruit pulp were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the two major anthocyanins, cyanidin-3-glucoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside, were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography-visible spectrometry. The contributions of the anthocyanins to the overall antioxidant capacities of the fruit were estimated to be only approximately 10%. Obviously, compounds not yet identified are responsible for the major part of the antioxidant capacities of the acai fruit pulp.
Euterpe Oleracea ( Acai ) as an alternative oral contrast agent in MRI of the gastrointestinal system: preliminary results.
Magn Reson Imaging. 2004 Apr;22(3):389-93.
Using contrast agents is a common practice in medical imaging protocols. Paramagnetic properties of certain compounds present in contrast agents can affect magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signals. For abdominal applications, they are usually injected, but may also be administered orally. However, their use as a routine technique is limited, mainly due to the lack of appropriate oral contrast agents. We herein present the preliminary characterization and results for implementation of Euterpe Oleracea (popularly named Acai) as a possible clinical oral contrast agent for MRI of the gastrointestinal tract. The pulp of Acai, a fruit from the Amazon area, presented an increase in T(1)-weighted MRI signal, equivalent to that of gadolinium-diethyltriamine pentaacetic acid, and a decrease in T(2)-weighted images. We looked for intrinsic properties that could be responsible for the T(1) signal enhancement and T(2) opacification. Atomic absorption spectra revealed the presence of Fe, Mn and Cu ions in Acai. The presence of such ions contribute to the susceptometric value found of chi = -4.83 x 10(-6). This finding assents with the hypothesis that image contrast changes were due to the presence of paramagnetic material. The first measurements in vivo demonstrate a clear increase of contrast, in T(1)-weighted images, due to the presence of Acai. Consistently, the opacification in a T(2)-weighted acquisition was evident, revealing a good contrast on bowel walls of gastric tissues.
Phytochemical composition and pigment stability of Acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.).

Anthocyanin and polyphenolic compounds present in acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) were determined and their respective contribution to the overall antioxidant capacity established. Color stability of acai anthocyanins against hydrogen peroxide (0 and 30 mmol/L) over a range of temperatures (10-30 degrees C) was also determined and compared to common anthocyanin sources. Additionally, stability in a model beverage system was evaluated in the presence of ascorbic acid and naturally occurring polyphenolic cofactors. Cyanidin 3-glucoside (1040 mg/L) was the predominant anthocyanin in acai and correlated to antioxidant content, while 16 other polyphenolics were detected from 4 to 212 mg/L. Red grape anthocyanins were most stable in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, while acai and pigments rich in acylated anthocyanins displayed lower color stability in a temperature-dependent manner. In the presence of ascorbic acid, acylated anthocyanin sources generally had increased color stability. Acai was recognized for its functional properties for use in food and nutraceutical products.
Acai Questions and Acai Information
Q. Hello, thank you so much for your website that is very resourceful... and it feels like you really want to help and educate and not only sell, sell, sell. Which fruit juice is more powerful with regards to overall health benefit and it's antioxident level, the Mangosteen or the Acai Berry. The orac scores indicate that 1 gram of Acai berry is 3800 orac value and the Mangosteen is 17,000 orac value, but I do not know what amount of Mangosteen they used to come up with that value. Do you know which fruit contains higher antioxident level?
A. Although people seem to focus on ORAC values, there are many other substances in herbs and plants that have beneficial effects. I prefer alternating the use of different herbs and not to rely on just one. For instance, one can have several different good herbal supplements, and each day take a different one. Some of the ones that come to mind include acai berry, cocoa, curcumin, goji berry, graviola, green tea extract, mangosteen, and pomegranate. This way benefits from the various herbs can be taken advantage of and the body is exposed to a variety of helpful substances without overdosing.
Q. Is acai a vitamin?
A. No, acai is a berry, but acai has many antioxidant vitamins.
Q. Is your acai product organic?
A. As much as possible we try to obtain our acai raw material from the best sources possible, but we cannot guarantee that every batch of acai product growing and manufacturing is organic.
Q. What are acai health benefit?
A. Acai has many antioxidants and can be helpful in medical conditions where antioxidants are useful.
Q. Can I add acai to a puree or smoothie I am making with other fruits?
A. Yes, you can open an acai capsule and add the acai powder to make a puree or acai smoothie with other fruits.
Q. Is acai juice safe?
A. As long as acai juice is used in reasonable amounts, we don't see why an acai drink would not be safe. Acai should not have side effects unless used in excessive amounts.
Q. Is your acai supplement the same berry Oprah had mentioned on her show?
A. Yes, it is the same acai berry fruit she had mentioned. Acai plant comes from many different plantations in the Amazon forest, particularly Brazil.
Q. My son must drug test at times for his job. Will Acai show up in the drug test in any way?
A. We can't imagine any substances in acai berry would cause a positive drug test.
Q. Does acai benefit skin tone?
A. We have not seen such acai research regarding influence on skin.
Q. Just a question about juices. From what I have read there are numerous benefits to taking Acai juice, Mangosteen, Noni, & Goji juices. I'd love to take all of them all the time but that gets kind of expensive. What 2 or 3 of those are the best ones?
A. I would suggest alternating their use, and after one bottle is finished, go on to another one. There is not way of predicting which one will be best for your particular needs, and it is better to have variety. Another option is to take small amounts of acai berry supplement or other supplements and alternate their use. By using the acai supplement, you save yourself lots of calories.
Q. Does an acai product aid in weight loss?
A. We have not seen any human studies with acai berry and weight loss.
Q. Does the acai berry supplement aid in weight loss, as i have seen an advertisement in a magazine, which quoted celebrities where using acai berry to help with weight loss is this correct. Your response would be much appreciated.
A. I have not seen studies regarding acai berry use and weight loss.
Q. Does Acai berry juice or Mona Vie Acai juice thin the blood?
A. MonaVie Acai juice and MonaVie Active Acai juice are both juices that are new to the market. MonaVie Acai juice is a blend of several fruit juices. As far as acai fruit is concerned, it does have flavonoids which are known to thin the blood, however no clinical human studies could be identified evaluating the role of acai berry and coagulation. Since MonaVie acai juice is a blend of several juices, it is difficult to say its role in blood thinning.
Q. What are acai side affects? Am trying acai berry and am constipated and bloated.
A. This is the first report we have had on potential acai berry side effects. Perhaps it is the acai berry or it could be coincidence and related to something else.
Q. I was reading your site and saw a question on constipation. A person indicated they had constipation since starting the acai berry. I had the exact opposite affect. I had pretty consistent constipation leading to hemorrhoids. But after being on an acia berry product my stools became consistently soft ending constipation and hemorrhoids. So perhaps that person should see what else they changed when they started the acai berry. It's hard to believe a fruit would cause constipation isn't it?
Q. I'm looking for acai berry truth. Does acai do what all the websites selling acai berry product claim?
A. Since human research with acai berry is lacking, no firm statements can be made regarding acai berry truth.
Q. Is it true acai berry on Oprah was mentioned?
A. Yes, Oprah mentioned acai berry on her show.
Q. What is the ORAC value of acai? I have been told that acai has high ORAC value.
A. The acai orac value can vary significantly from crop to crop and method of harvesting, storage, encapsulation, etc. But acai does have a high orac value and it is not too important for practical health reasons to know exactly what the orac value is for a fruit, vegetable, herb, or supplement. Measurements of oxygen radical absorbance capacity ORAC on freeze-dried acai pulp and skin powders have been done for each of four reactive oxygen species (ROS) - superoxide, peroxynitrite, hydroxyl radical and peroxyl radical for both hydrophilic- and lipid-soluble species. The assay for superoxide, considered perhaps the most representative determination of antioxidant capacity (as it is involved in formation of other ROS and circulates systemically in blood), revealed a value of 161,400 units per 100 g, the highest result yet found for superoxide radical among plant foods. Total ORAC (against peroxyl radical) determined from both hydrophilic and lipophilic sources was 102,700 units per 100 g, again the highest value found to date among edible fruits and vegetables for this radical. Schauss AG, Wu X, Prior RL, Ou B, Huang D, Owens J, Agarwal A, Jensen GS, Hart AN, Shanbrom E. Antioxidant capacity and other bioactivities of the freeze-dried amazonian palm berry, Euterpe oleraceae mart. ( acai berry ). J Agric Food Chem. 2006 Nov 1;54(22):8604-10.
Q. Your web site says acai berry is a vasodilator that it dilates blood vessels but all other sites say the opposite. Are you sure about this? I have lupus so i don't want something that dilates blood vessels.
A. There is one study that says the compounds in acai berry act as vasodilators. We have no other studies to prove or disprove this. However, it is premature to be concerned about acai berry and lupus based only on vasodilation. Many compounds such as polyphenols have anti-inflammatory activity and we don't know the infuence of acai berry on the symptoms of lupus until studies are done.
Q. What are the effects of acai berry on the hemoglobin?
A. I have not come across research regarding the influence of acai on hemoglobin. As a general rule, the influence of an herb or supplement on various aspects of human physiology and biochemistry depends largely on the dose or amount use.
Q. What is the recommended acai dosage do you suggest? I have ordered the acia berry extract 500 mg. How often should acai supplement be taken?
A. There is no answer that applies to everyone. Much depends on a person's medical condition, what medications they are using, what other supplements they are taking, etc. As a general rule, one capsule of acai berry supplement a few times a week seems reasonable for most people.
Q. How many capsules per day is the recommended dosage for acai extract supplements?
A. There are no official guidelines on the proper dosage of acai extract capsules. Hardly any human studies have been done with acai berry, juice or capsules. As a general rule, taking one acai extract capsule a day seems reasonable.

In alternative health, açaí is all the rage. While relatively new to the American consciousness, açaí has been around for centuries and has helped many people with its healthful qualities. In order to benefit completely from açaí, however, one must truly understand what it is and what it does.
What is Açaí?
Açaí is a distinct purple berry indigenous to the Amazon rainforest. The açaí fruit may be found in some of the large palm trees that grow in the thick forest; these trees can reach as high as 82 feet! Unlike cherries, which grow individually in trees, the açaí berry grows in bunches, more like bananas. One average, each palm tree can yield anywhere from three to eight bunches.
What's so great about açaí?
You might say açaí is fast becoming known as a wonder food for its versatility. Açaí has nutrient properties and is naturally rich in:
* Omega fats (the good kind, unlike the saturated fats found in fast food)
* amino acids
* electrolytes
* antioxidants
* protein
* vitamins A, B1 and E
The people of the Amazon rainforest use açaí in many different dishes - from drinks and shakes to breakfasts and bars. Brazilians use açaí to flavor meat and fish entrees, too, topping dishes with a pulpy, curd-like substance made from the fruit.
Not only does açaí provide a delicious taste to complement food, it is known around the Amazon for amazing health benefits. Açaí is known to be used for treatment of digestive problems, skin irritation, sexual dysfunction, and even insomnia. The açaí berry is naturally low in sugar, too.
Only in recent years have people in North America discovered how açaí makes them feel energetic and healthy. Take a trip to your favorite smoothie place and you might find açaí as one of the add-in ingredients available to you. Not only are consumers finding the benefits of açaí to their interest, but researchers and the media are amazed by the power of this small berry. NBC's Today did a feature story on açaí in 2004, and more recently researchers at the University of Florida tested the attributes of açaí to discover it actually destroyed cultured leukemia cells!
Will açaí cure cancer? We can't say for certain. All we know is that açaí possesses some very strong health properties that may benefit people in the long run.
Can you eat the berries that make açaí directly?
Strangely enough, no. It is not recommended that one just pluck the berries from the tree and start snacking. The berries are harvested and processed, and the açaí is extracted from the pulp of the berry and sold in stores all over South America. It is said that beverages containing açaí are more popular than milk in the southern hemisphere. That's because South Americans know they are getting a pure, healthy drink that benefits their alertness and well-being, and it gets them through the day.
Where do you get açaí?
Enter açaí into Internet search and you are bound to find hundreds of online shops selling açaí in various forms - drinks, powders, and capsules. This wonder supplement is in very high demand, but when you shop for açaí it is important to know whether or not you are getting the purest extracts of açaí available, directly from the Amazon Rainforest. Check the labels!
Does açaí cause any side effects?
Current research indicates no known side effects to taking açaí in any form. Though açaí has been around for ages, it is still quite new to the United States, and no doubt is still being observed by health professionals. However, the testimony of the overall health of the Amazonian people speaks well for this little fruit with big potential.

The following information on acai is from wikipedia
The Acai Fruit
Acai berries are harvested as food. In a study of three traditional Caboclo populations in the Amazon region of Brazil, acai palm was described as the most important plant species because the acai fruit makes up such a major component of diet (up to 42% of the total food intake by weight) and is economically valuable in the region (Murrieta et al., 1999).
The juice and pulp of acai fruits (Euterpe oleracea) are frequently used in various juice blends, smoothies, sodas, and other beverages. In northern Brazil, açaí is traditionally served in gourds called "cuias" with tapioca and sometimes sugar. Acai has become a fad in southern Brazil where it is consumed cold as açaí na tigela ("açaí in the bowl"), mostly mixed with granola - a fad where acai is considered as an energizer. Acai is also widely consumed in Brazil as an ice cream flavor or juice.
As acai deteriorates rapidly after harvest, its raw material is generally only available outside the immediate growing region as acai juice or acai fruit pulp that has been frozen, dried acai, or freeze-dried. However, several companies now manufacture acai juices, other health drinks, and sorbets made from acai berries, often in combination with other fruits.
